There is now just one week left for residents, businesses and other stakeholders to have their say on Tamworth Borough Council’s draft local plan.
The formal six-week consultation on the pre-submission local plan closes on Monday 5 October 2026, with people encouraged to take the opportunity to review the proposals and submit their comments before the deadline.
The local plan will set out the vision, policies and framework for how land across Tamworth will be used and developed through to 2043. It will help guide decisions on planning applications, including what is built, where development takes place and which areas are protected.
The draft plan covers a wide range of issues that will shape the future of the borough, including:
- Housing – the number, type and location of new homes
- Economy and employment – supporting businesses and job opportunities
- Town centre and retail – the future of Tamworth town centre and the wider retail offer
- Healthy communities – supporting health and wellbeing
- Heritage – protecting Tamworth’s historic buildings and character
- Design and placemaking – ensuring new development is well designed and reflects local character
- Flooding – managing flood risk
- Natural environment – protecting biodiversity and wildlife
- Environmental protection – managing pollution and protecting residents’ quality of life
- Sustainable transport – supporting walking, cycling and public transport
- Infrastructure – ensuring roads, utilities and community facilities support new development
The consultation is the latest stage in the preparation of the plan, following several months of engagement with residents, businesses, community groups and other stakeholders. who have helped shape the plan at every stage of its development, from early conversations about priorities for the borough through to detailed feedback on specific policies and proposals. The council would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to contribute their views so far.
The local plan sets out the vision, policies and framework for how land across the borough will be used and developed between now and 2043. It guides decisions on planning applications and determines what gets built, where, and what areas are protected, making this consultation a genuine opportunity for people to influence the future shape of their town.
The plan is underpinned by a set of principles that will guide decision-making across the borough to 2043. These include making the best use of Tamworth's limited supply of land; delivering high quality, affordable homes to meet the community's diverse needs; supporting and diversifying the local economy; and regenerating the town centre into a thriving destination with a vibrant evening economy.
Councillor Ben Clarke, portfolio holder for housing, homelessness and planning at Tamworth Borough Council, said: “There is now just one week left to have your say on the draft local plan, so I would encourage anyone with an interest in Tamworth’s future to take a look at the document and submit their comments before the consultation closes.
“The local plan covers a wide range of issues, from housing and employment to the future of our town centre, heritage, infrastructure and the natural environment. The decisions made through the planning process can have a lasting impact on our communities.

Residents and stakeholders can view the draft local plan and supporting documents, and submit their comments, via the council’s website: www.tamworth.gov.uk/consultation. Paper copies are also available to view at Marmion House, Lichfield Street and at local libraries.
The final version of the local plan will go to full council in December 2026 for a decision on whether to submit it for examination.
