Tamworth Borough Council is delighted to announce that it will receive £139,120 from the government’s Museum Renewal Fund, helping to secure a bright future for Tamworth Castle Museum- one of the region’s most cherished heritage landmarks.

The funding is part of a £20 million national investment from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and delivered by Arts Council England, designed to help keep local museums open, resilient and engaging for generations to come.

Sir Nicholas Serota, Chair, Arts Council England, said: “Travelling through cities, towns, and villages across the UK, I have seen that museums and art galleries are often a proud focal point in communities, telling important stories about history, people and place. This funding will provide a crucial lifeline for local museums in stabilising their financial situation and building towards a sustainable future.”

Tamworth is one of 75 museum organisations across England to benefit from this latest round of support. The fund will make sure that people across the country can continue to access culture locally, as part of the government’s Plan for Change and its £270 million Arts Everywhere Fund.

Councillor Lewis Smith, portfolio holder for people services, engagement, leisure and heritage for Tamworth Borough Council said: “This is fantastic news for Tamworth Castle, our residents, and visitors. The funding will help us continue to grow its appeal as a cultural and educational destination.

“The castle museum isn’t just a historic building - it’s part of Tamworth’s identity. Generations of families have explored its rooms, enjoyed its events, and shared in its stories. This funding will help us make the visitor experience even better.

“This investment underlines our continued commitment to strengthening our tourism offer, and making sure our cultural assets remain at the heart of the town’s future growth and prosperity.”

Liz Johnson, Midlands Area Director at Arts Council England also said: “Museums can inspire, empower and enrich people’s lives. The Museum Renewal Fund aims to help museums become more financially resilient so they can build for a more sustainable future.

“We’re pleased that so many museums across the Midlands will benefit from this investment. As well as helping these museums to become more financially stable, the funding will help to secure employment and protect public access to museum collections. This will ensure more people can learn, discover, and be inspired by the stories of our region’s rich histories.”

The funding will help Tamworth Castle manage rising costs and funding challenges, while supporting future improvements and long-term growth.
