  • Registering takes minutes - apply online
  • Remember you also need ID to now vote in all UK elections

On Thursday 5 March, Spital Ward residents will have their say at the Tamworth by-election.

Residents must be on the electoral register to be able to vote in March. With the registration deadline approaching, Tamworth Borough Council is urging those who are not registered at their current address to make sure they are registered before it is too late.

The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Tuesday 17 February 2026. It takes just five minutes to apply online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

The Spital Ward by-election is taking place due to the sad passing of Councillor Marion Couchman in December 2025.

Stephen Gabriel, Returning Officer for Tamworth Borough Council, said:

“If you’re not registered by Tuesday 17 February, you will not be able to vote in these elections in March. Registering to vote only takes five minutes and can be done online.”

If you have recently turned 18 or moved home, it is particularly important to make sure you are correctly registered to vote. If you’re in doubt, you can check with us by contacting us on elections@tamworth.gov.uk or phone 01827 214155.

Those intending to vote at polling stations in March will need to show photo ID. A list of accepted forms of ID is available on the Electoral Commission website at https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/voter-id

Those who do not have eligible ID can apply for free voter ID at https://voter-authority-certificate.service.gov.uk/

If you will be away or cannot go to the polling station on Thursday 5 March, you can apply to vote by post. You can complete an application online at www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote. The deadline for completed postal vote applications to reach the Electoral Services Office is 5pm on Wednesday 18 February. If you miss this deadline, you will still have time to apply to vote by proxy. You can complete an application online at www.gov.uk/apply-proxy-vote. The deadline for completed proxy vote applications to reach the Electoral Services Office is 5pm on Wednesday 25 February.
