Planning approval granted for restoration of historic Market Street buildings

Tamworth Borough Council is announcing another major milestone in its ambitious Future High Street Fund regeneration project, following the approval of plans to restore and renovate the historic properties at 26a, 27, and 27a Market Street.

This final project in the town’s extensive regeneration programme will see the three Grade II listed buildings, located close to Tamworth Castle, carefully restored and brought back into active use. This will preserve their historic character while securing their future as part of a thriving town centre.

The approved plans include comprehensive structural repairs, re-roofing, façade restoration, and internal refurbishments to make the properties watertight, safe, and compliant with modern building and fire safety standards. A new stair tower will replace the existing unsafe structure, and the ground floors will be refurbished for town centre uses which could include traditional retail or more innovative artisan businesses, cafés and experiences, contributing to a more vibrant Market Street.

BSN Construction Group are appointed to carry out the project. They are heritage conservation experts with extensive experience working with notable organisations including the National Trust and Historic England, making them ideally suited to deliver this sensitive and complex project.

The contract has been awarded following detailed investigative work which identified the specialist nature of conservation required for these Grade II listed buildings. The historic significance and condition of the properties mean they require the particular expertise that BSN Group Construction can provide.

The restoration will be developed in close consultation with heritage and conservation officers to make sure a sensitive and responsible approach is taken to respect the buildings’ historic significance and architectural integrity.

Councillor Carol Dean, Leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: “We’re delighted that plans for the Market Street buildings have now been approved – marking the final stage in the Future High Street Fund programme. This project will breathe new life into these important historic buildings and make sure they can once again play an active role in our community.

“So much has already been achieved through our Future High Street Fund programme, from the redevelopment of the former Peel Café and restoration of the Co-op building to the regeneration of St Editha’s Square. Each project has contributed to revitalising the town centre, supporting local businesses, and creating spaces that people can enjoy and be proud of, while showcasing the historic castle, town hall and St Editha’s Church.

“Our regeneration programme is delivering real results. We know there’s been some disruption along the way, but the outcome will be a town centre that’s fit for the future – vibrant, welcoming, and full of opportunity. We encourage everyone to continue supporting local businesses as we move into this exciting final phase.”

The Market Street restoration joins a list of key regeneration achievements across Tamworth, including:

  • The Elizabeth Bradford Business Centre: A new enterprise centre in the original 19th Century former Co-operative building on Colehill.
  • A wider footbridge into the castle grounds, to enhance the significance of the grade 1 listed castle, and the existing character and appearance of the conservation area.
  • Redevelopment replicating the original Georgian style of the former Peel Café, bringing a building back into active use. (The new home to the Nationwide Building Society)
  • Refurbished and paved St Editha's Square.
  • Town Hall Place – a new flexible, multi-use building in Middle Entry, for seven independent small businesses. (Expected to welcome new small retail tenants January onwards.)
  • Public realm works linking all the projects together.
