Tamworth Borough Council is excited to announce that tea style dances are returning to Tamworth Assembly Rooms on Wednesday 28 May.

Tea dances graced the auditorium floor at the Assembly Rooms for many years. They were very well attended, giving people the opportunity to socialise, dance and enjoy tea and cake! It evolved from the concept of afternoon tea in the 1880’s and became hugely fashionable in the early 20th century.

With the popularity of TV shows like Strictly Come Dancing, ballroom dancing, along with swing, salsa, Latin American, modern jive and many more dance styles, have been given a modern twist with various music collaborations, creating a renaissance in recent years for both older generations and younger vintage enthusiasts.

Modern tea dances bring not only vintage music, but also music of a younger generation in a traditional musical style. The classes bring together people who want to dance or just watch and socialise, in a fun atmosphere while enjoying afternoon tea and cake!

The afternoon dances are delivered by Richard Evans, a National Association Teachers of Dancing NATD associate member.

Richard said:” I started dancing at the age of 21 after seeing an advert in the Tamworth Herald for a local beginners' ballroom class.

“Since then, I have earned professional qualifications in Classical Sequence, Ballroom and Latin American. I have also competed in inventive sequence competitions for new sequence dances.

“I’m excited to be bringing these sessions back to the Assembly Rooms and hope that this new modern approach will attract people not afraid to ask someone for a dance and join a community of people who love music and dancing.”

The dances will take place monthly from Wednesday 28 May 2pm-4pm, priced at £10 per person. Find out more and book via the website here: Book an Event | assemblyrooms or call the booking office on 01827 709618.

Councillor Lewis Smith, portfolio holder for people services, leisure and engagement, said: “The Assembly Rooms is the perfect venue for tea dances, and I’m delighted to see they are returning after many years to a new audience, as well as encouraging some of our more vintage audience.

“The iconic auditorium will be filled with familiar music, tables and plenty of space for anyone who wants to take to the floor. This modern take on tea dances will appeal to all ages and abilities, we can’t wait to see the boards graced with dancing once again.”
