Support for Armed Forces

We are proud to support The Staffordshire Armed Forces Covenant. The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, along with their families, should be treated fairly.

It is a promise that they should not be disadvantaged because of their service and also acts as recognition of the sacrifices members of the armed forces make on our behalf.

Since its launch in 2012, the Armed Forces Covenant has been signed by every council in the country, along with over 3,000 businesses and other organisations.

The Staffordshire Armed Forces Covenant aims to:

  • Encourage people to support their local armed forces community and nurture public understanding and awareness of issues affecting them
  • Recognise and remember the sacrifices faced by the armed forces community
  • Encourage activities which help to integrate the armed forces community into local life
  • Encourage the armed forces community to help and support the wider community, whether through participation in events and joint projects, or other forms of engagement

Cllr Andrew Cooper was appointed to the role of Armed Forces Community Champion at Tamworth Borough Council in 2023.

On appointment Cllr Cooper said:

“I am really proud to have been chosen for this hugely important role and fully understand the responsibility that goes with it. I feel I am absolutely the right person for the job because of the level of respect I have for our armed forces. I joined the army in 2001 and served with the 1st Battalion the Staffordshire Regiment until 2007 where I undertook deployments to Kosovo and Iraq. I saw firsthand the effects of deployment on people who are serving, or have served, and I am proud to ensure that I can personally guide and hold the council to account on the military covenant.”

The Staffordshire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership

Tamworth Borough Council is part of The Staffordshire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership which is working with the armed forces to help and support current and former service personnel and their families within the local area.

The partnership is also encouraging Staffordshire businesses, community groups and individuals to pledge their support to armed forces personnel, as well as reservists, veterans and their families.

Employer Recognition Scheme bronze award certificate

Tamworth Borough Council received a bronze award from the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), in national recognition of our commitment to the armed forces.
