Community governance review timeline

We are carrying out this consultation in two stages. 

Stage one timeline:

19 May 2026 

Full council approved the terms of reference, signifying the start of the review. 

29 June – 9 August 2026 

Stage one public consultation. 

August – September 

Councillor cross party working group considers the consultation findings and develops any recommendation. 

 

Stage two timeline:

24 August 2026 

Councillor cross party working group agrees recommendations for consultation. 

4 September – 4 October 2026 

Stage two public consultation 

October 2026 – November 2026

Councillor cross party working group considers the consultation findings and makes a final recommendation for decision at full council. 

8 December 2026

Full council decision on whether to create a parish council for Tamworth, including provisional precept. 

December 2026 – March 2027 

Governance arrangements put in place, including: 

  • Application to central government to create a town council. 
  • Statutory instruments laid and agreed in law. 
  • Elections arrangements and planning. 

1 April 2027

New parish council starts, local people pay precept as an addition to council tax. 

6 May 2027 Councillors elected to new parish council.

This timeline is provisional and depends on the outcome of full council decision on 8 December 2026.
