  • BSN Group Construction awarded contract to refurbish Grade II listed buildings
  • Work expected to start Spring 2026
  • Specialist heritage expertise needed following detailed investigative work

Tamworth Borough Council has appointed BSN Group Construction to carry out the restoration and renovation of the historic Market Street properties, 26a, 27, and 27a, as part of the Future High Streets Fund regeneration programme.

BSN Group Construction are heritage conservation experts with extensive experience working with notable organisations including the National Trust and Historic England, making them ideally suited to deliver this sensitive and complex project.

The contract has been awarded following detailed investigative work which identified the specialist nature of conservation required for these Grade II listed buildings, located next to Tamworth Castle. The historic significance and condition of the properties mean they require the particular expertise that BSN Group Construction can provide.

Councillor Carol Dean, leader of Tamworth Borough Council, said: "We're delighted to welcome BSN Group Construction to deliver this important final stage of our Future High Streets Fund programme. Their specialist heritage conservation expertise makes them the perfect partner to restore these beautiful Grade II listed buildings.

"The detailed investigative work carried out has shown us just how significant and delicate this restoration needs to be. These properties sit right next to our magnificent castle and need the specialist care and attention that BSN Group Construction will provide.

"While this project will extend beyond the completion of our main regeneration programme, it remains an essential part of our vision for the town centre. We're proud of everything we've achieved so far – from the stunning Town Hall Place, to the restored 19th Century former Co-op building and St Editha's Square. This final piece will complete the transformation, bringing these historic buildings back to life as a thriving part of our town.

"The ambition has always been to restore the town centre as the busy, thriving heart of the community, and protect the town’s historic buildings for future generations. This project does exactly that."

The comprehensive restoration will see the three Grade II listed buildings brought back into active use. The works include structural repairs to make the buildings watertight and safe, re-roofing, façade restoration, and internal upgrades to meet current fire safety standards. Ground floors will be refurbished for town centre uses which could include retail or artisan businesses, while a new compliant stair tower will replace the existing unsafe structure.

All restoration work will be both responsible and sympathetic to the historic character of the buildings.

Darren Perry, Joint Managing Director and Founder of BSN Group said: “We’re delighted to be working with Tamworth Borough Council on the restoration and regeneration in Market Street. Heritage work is incredibly important to us—not only for the preservation of these historic buildings, but for the opportunity it gives to showcase true craftsmanship and to help tell the story each structure holds. We look forward to bringing Market Street’s character and history back to life for the community.”

This project represents the final stage of Tamworth Borough Council's ambitious £21million Future High Streets Fund regeneration programme, which has already delivered significant improvements across the town centre.

The wider regeneration programme is nearing completion and has delivered:

  • The Elizabeth Bradford Business Centre: A new enterprise centre in the original 19th Century former Co-operative building on Colehill. (Completed)
  • A wider footbridge into the castle grounds, to enhance the significance of the grade 1 listed castle, and the existing character and appearance of the conservation area. (Completed)
  • Redevelopment replicating the original Georgian style of the former Peel Café, bringing a building back into active use. (Completed, and the new home to the Nationwide Building Society)
  • Refurbished and paved St Editha's Square. (Completed)
  • Town Hall Place – a new flexible, multi-use building in Middle Entry, for seven independent small businesses. (Expected to welcome new small retail tenants soon)
  • Public realm works linking all the projects together. (Expected completion late December)

Additionally, South Staffordshire College opened its new college facility in September 2025. Together, Tamworth Borough Council's regeneration project and the new college deliver a combined investment of over £40million in Tamworth town centre.

The restoration of the Market Street properties will mark the completion of a transformative chapter for Tamworth, creating a town centre that celebrates its rich heritage whilst providing modern spaces for businesses and the community to thrive for generations to come.

Throughout the restoration work, the town centre and market will remain open, and residents and visitors are encouraged to continue supporting local businesses.
