Tamworth Borough Council has launched a new ‘Tamworth place prospectus’, showcasing the borough as a place to invest, develop and do business.

Located in the heart of the Midlands, Tamworth is home to around 81,000 people and benefits from strong regional and national connectivity. The town is close to the M42, A5 and A38, while rail services connect Tamworth to Birmingham in as little as 15 minutes and London Euston in just over an hour.

The prospectus highlights Tamworth’s established business base, established visitor economy, rich heritage and strategic location, alongside the significant investment already taking place across the town centre.

More than £40 million investment has been delivered through the town centre regeneration programme, including £21.6 million from the UK Government’s Future High Streets Fund, alongside council and private investment. This has supported projects including St Editha’s Square, Town Hall Place, Castle Gateway and the Elizabeth Bradford Business Centre, helping to create new spaces for businesses, improve the town centre environment and strengthen connections between its key destinations.

The prospectus also sets out a number of significant opportunities for future investment, including Ankerside, Gungate and Marmion House.

Ankerside, which is owned and managed by Tamworth Borough Council, represents a major opportunity to consider the future of one of the town’s largest sites, with potential for a more diverse mix of retail, leisure and residential uses and stronger connections with the River Anker, Castle Grounds and wider town centre.

Gungate is a strategic regeneration site of around 2.76 hectares, less than half a mile from Tamworth railway station. The emerging vision includes a strong housing focus alongside potential leisure, hotel, workspace and other uses.

Marmion House, a council-owned site in the heart of the town centre, is also being explored as a residential opportunity, with feasibility and option work already undertaken and further market engagement planned.

Councillor Nova Arkney, portfolio holder for infrastructure and the local economy for Tamworth Borough Council, said: “Tamworth is a town with a strong identity, a resilient economy and a significant opportunity to build on the investment and regeneration already taking place.

“Our place prospectus brings together the strengths that make Tamworth an attractive proposition for businesses and investors, from our location and connectivity to our heritage, visitor economy and established business community.

“Importantly, it also sets out the opportunities that are available for those who want to be part of Tamworth’s future. Ankerside, Gungate and Marmion House each have the potential to play an important role in the next phase of the town’s development, building on the substantial investment that has already taken place.

“We want to open up conversations with investors, developers and businesses who share our ambition for Tamworth and are interested in being part of its continued growth.”

The prospectus also sets out the support available to businesses and developers, including advice from the council’s economic development and regeneration team, business support, funding and skills support, as well as assistance with finding premises and navigating the planning process.
