Tamworth Borough Council are excited to announce that a unique new project is underway at Tamworth Castle, blending the town’s rich Victorian heritage with modern creativity.
Working with South Staffordshire College students, the Queen Victoria textiles project invites the next generation of fashion and textile makers to rediscover and celebrate the art of Victorian clothing and craftsmanship.
Inspired by a rare set of fabric samples in Tamworth Castle’s collection, originally linked to Queen Victoria’s 1843 visit to meet Prime Minister Robert Peel at Drayton Manor, the project explores the detail, colour, and context of 19th century textile design. These materials, once used to dress the Queen, are now inspiring a fresh wave of creativity among 22 students from South Staffordshire College.
As part of the Castle’s Heritage Crafts Programme, funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), students are participating in a series of workshops led by heritage craft specialists, including:
- Maya Howes, a historic costumier, teaching corset flossing, cartridge pleating, and Victorian costume construction.
 - Louise West, a renowned lace maker, introducing traditional 19th-century lace-making techniques.

Over the coming weeks, students are visiting Tamworth Castle to explore its Victorian interiors and collections, drawing inspiration for their final pieces. The project will showcase its achievements in a public exhibition during February half term, with a collection of Victorian-inspired garments and accessories, celebrating the fusion of history, learning, and local partnership.
Councillor Lewis Smith, portfolio holder for people services, leisure and engagement, heritage, said: “This project is a wonderful example of how our heritage can inspire a new generation.
“By connecting students with expert makers and giving them the opportunity to explore Tamworth’s royal links and Victorian legacy, we’re not just preserving history we’re bringing it to life. I can’t wait to see what the students create.”
Photos, videos and stories from the workshops and student visits will be shared on the council and castle's social media pages, follow along to see the project unfold! www.facebook.com/TamworthBoroughCouncil/ and www.facebook.com/tamworthcastle/
