Sale of land used as a former plant nursery has been agreed. The land, owned by Tamworth Borough Council, is being sold to Staffordshire County Council to create much needed additional nursing home capacity in Tamworth.

The site at Solway Close is next to Wigginton Park and Tamworth Rugby Club. The land, which was previously in business use as a plant nursery, has been designated for residential development in Tamworth’s local plan adopted in 2016. The land is not part of Wiggington Park.

The construction of a new nursing home has been agreed in principle by Staffordshire County Council and is now subject to due diligence before being finalised.

Proceeds from the sale will be ring-fenced for use on the Gungate Masterplan site development. The terms of the sale were agreed in December 2023.

Councillor Thomas Jay leader of Tamworth Borough Council said:

“We’re pleased to be able to use this land to support the increase in nursing care provision in Tamworth.

“We considered a number of options for redevelopment of this site, including residential housing, however the sale of the land to Staffordshire County Council offers both best value to us as a council and supports the wellbeing of the future community by enabling residents to maintain their personal identity while receiving appropriate care.”

Staffordshire County Council has identified Tamworth as a priority area for care provision due to increasing local demand. The new state of the art facility will provide appropriate quality care for those with varying health and care needs.

Councillor Mike Wilcox, Staffordshire County Council cabinet member for Health and Care, said: “With an ageing population and increasing demand for nursing care, it is sensible to look at our options and see how we can increase capacity in the areas of the county that need it the most.

“A new nursing home would allow us to offer good quality, affordable placements to support the most vulnerable people in Tamworth and I am delighted that this land agreement now brings our vision a step closer.”
