  • Council tax increase of 2.99%
  • For most, that is less than 11pence a week increase
  • The increase forms part of the council’s overall budget for 2026/27

Tamworth Borough Council at full council on 24 February, set the 2026/27 council tax level and budget.

Council tax increase has been set at 2.99 per cent. The new payment each month (based on annual figures) for bands A-D properties, are as follows:

Band A - £143.33, an increase of 8p per week.
Band B - £167.22, an increase of 9p per week.
Band C - £191.11, an increase of 11p per week.
Band D - £215, an increase of 12p per week.

For most Tamworth residents who live in properties with a council tax band A, B or C the increase is 11p or less per week.

At its recent budget review, the council agreed a council tax increase for the 2026/27 financial year as part of setting a balanced budget and medium-term financial strategy.

The increase forms part of the council’s overall budget for 2026/27, which sets out how services will be funded while responding to rising costs and ongoing financial pressures. The budget reflects higher costs linked to inflation, increased demand for services, and new statutory and regulatory requirements.

Due to increasing costs and reducing government grants, setting the council’s budget is challenging, and there is a significant gap forecast between the money coming in and the costs of services. This shortfall is being met from council reserves in the short term, however savings of more than £1million per year are necessary from 2027/28.

Income from council tax contributes to funding local services alongside business rates and government funding. For 2026/27, the council is forecasting a net cost of services of £12.57million, with council tax income expected to raise approximately £5.18 million towards this total.

Most of a council tax bill goes to Staffordshire County Council, plus payments to the police and fire authorities; with around 9p in every pound of council tax retained by Tamworth Borough Council which, for the next financial year, this will generate £5.18m towards the provision of borough services.

The money that Tamworth Borough Council collects through council tax helps pay for services such as household waste collection and recycling, street cleansing, and maintaining parks and open spaces, Tamworth Castle and Tamworth Assembly Rooms.
