  • The public drop-off point builds on the council’s ongoing support for Tamworth’s Hygiene Bank

Tamworth Borough Council is extending its support for The Hygiene Bank by making Marmion House a public drop-off point for donations of essential hygiene and personal care products once again.

The collection point has been available for council staff and councillors for many years. Opening it to the public will give more people the opportunity to donate items to support local individuals and families experiencing hygiene poverty.

Tamworth Hygiene Bank is a charity that collects and distributes hygiene and personal care products to people who cannot afford them, helping make sure everyone has access to the essentials they need to feel clean, confident and comfortable.

Feedback from a Tamworth Primary School highlighted the important of these donations, with the school saying: “These donations make such a difference to our families. Things like conditioner, new toothbrushes, and deodorant are a luxury to some of our families.”

Residents wishing to donate can bring items to Marmion House reception. All items must be new and unused. Packs of nappies can donated if they open or partly used packs.

Councillor Lewis Smith, portfolio holder for people services, engagement, leisure and heritage for Tamworth Borough Council, said: “Access to everyday essentials such as shampoo, toothpaste and period products is something many take for granted, but these items can be difficult to afford for some individuals and families.

“Tamworth’s Hygiene Bank does important work to help people get the products they need, while also helping to protect their dignity and confidence. By opening the Marmion House collection point to the public, we’re giving more people the opportunity to support this work and make a difference locally.

“We know that people across our community want to help others, and even a small donation can make a real difference. I’d encourage anyone who is able to donate to bring items to Marmion House and help support those who need it most.”

Marie Ballard, Volunteer Project Coordinator for Tamworth, said: “Hygiene poverty can affect anyone, at any point in their life. Circumstances such as bereavement or losing a job can make it difficult for people to afford everyday essentials and this can have a real impact on a person’s confidence, wellbeing and dignity.

“Having Marmion House as a public drop-off point means more people can get involved and help make a difference in their local community.

“We’re really grateful to Tamworth Borough Council for its continued support and to everyone who takes the time to donate. Every item can help someone who needs it.”

The collection box is available in Marmion House front reception.
