Community governance review timeline

We are carrying out this consultation in two stages.

19 May 2026 

Full council approved the terms of reference, signifying the start of the review. 

29 June – 9 August 2026 

Stage one public consultation. 

August – September 

Councillor cross party working group considers the consultation findings and develops any recommendation. 

The following timetable is provisional and dependent on whether local people show support for a parish council for Tamworth in the stage one consultation.

Councillor cross party working group agrees recommendations for consultation. 

September – November 2026 

Stage two public consultation 

December 2026 – February 2027 

Councillor cross party working group considers the consultation findings and makes a final recommendation for decision. 

May 2027 

Full council decision on whether to create a parish council for Tamworth, including provisional precept. 

May 2027 – March 2028 

Governance arrangements put in place, including: 

  • Application to central government to create a town council. 
  • Statutory instruments laid and agreed in law. 
  • Elections arrangements and planning. 
  • Preparations to transfer services., 

1 April 2028 

New parish council starts, local people pay precept as an addition to council tax. 

4 May 2028 

Councillors elected to new parish council
