Free sporting and creative activities on offer for young local people

Free sporting and creative activities for young people are being offered at Tamworth parks every week, as part of an incentive to encourage youngsters to learn new skillsets and try something new.

The free activities are aimed at 8-16 year-olds, but children outside of this range are also encouraged to join in. The project offers a range of activities including football, basketball, dodgeball, rounders, archery tag and new to the programme - bubble football.

Sessions are being run by Sporting Communities in partnership with Staffordshire County Council, Tamworth Borough Council, Tamworth Community Safety Partnership and the Office of Fire Police and Crime Commissioner (OFPCC).

Sport can achieve a number of great outcomes within communities; it can help to form positive relationships, build confidence, change the perceptions of young people and teach essential life skills such as teamwork, co-operation, self-management and much more.

Utilising the skills of professional artists, Sporting Communities’ Creative Communities team also offer activities which can help youngsters to express themselves and learn how to conduct safe art within their community. This can be using a wide range of modern and contemporary artistic mediums including sculpting, painting and using graffiti art.

Sporting Communities Managing Director, Ben Rigby, said “We are really excited to be working in Tamworth. It is a great borough with a lot of people who are passionate about their community. Our team will be connecting with young people and providing them with positive opportunities to give them the greatest chance to succeed in life.”

The current timetable of youth events is available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, at the following parks:

  • Wednesday: Stonydelph, Crowden Road: 5pm-6.30pm and Wigginton Park: 6.30pm-8pm
  • Thursday: Belgrave, Birds Bush Road: 5.30pm-7pm
  • Friday: Castle Grounds: 6.30pm-8pm and Glascote, Hawksworth Courts:  8pm-9.30pm

Sporting Communities pride themselves on working with young people, supporting them to broaden their horizons and overcome any barriers such as mental health challenges, bullying, alcohol and drugs, to help achieve positive outcomes in their lives.
