Food Hygiene InspectionsAppeal Against Your Hygiene Rating Food businesses have a right to appeal food hygiene ratings given following inspection if they do not agree that the rating reflects management controls and standards found at the time of the inspection. Before making an appeal, business owners or managers should contact the food safety officer named in the letter or post-inspection report first to understand why the rating was given. If the business owner or manager still thinks that the rating is unfair or wrong, they can appeal in writing. Rescoring Revisits An establishment with a rating of 5 has the highest rating possible. If you are rated 4,3,2,1,or 0 and have made improvements to your business, you can pay for a visit to be carried out before your next planned inspection. These non-statutory rescoring visits:
You can request and pay for as many visits as necessary but your re-rating will only be successful if you have taken action to make improvements in the business. Areas for improvement are detailed in the last report of inspection or letter. You can contact the officer to seek further clarification by telephone. It is important to note that the new rating could also go down if improvements have not been made or if other contraventions are noted at the time of the visit. To request a visit you will need to:-

Send a food business right to reply The right to reply allows the business to tell customers how the business has improved its hygiene standards or if there were unusual circumstances at the time of inspection. This response will be published online, alongside the rating, by the local authority. No fee is payable.
