Chart-topping band The Christians to perform at Tamworth Assembly Rooms

The-Christians-Tamworth-Assembly-RoomsA chart-topping band with a double platinum album and an impressive catalogue of hits will be coming to Tamworth Assembly Rooms as part of their UK revival tour, it has been announced.

The Christians, best known for hit songs including Ideal World, Harvest for the World, Words, Born Again, What’s in a Word and more, will be performing at the newly-refurbished theatre on Saturday, June 27, 2020.

Tickets to the eagerly-anticipated gig go on sale this Thursday, October 24, at 10am and are expected to sell quickly.

Hailing from Liverpool, The Christians enjoyed huge acclaim in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s in the UK and Europe, and are renowned for a string of soulful yet socially-aware hits.

Their 1987 debut album The Christians went double platinum and entered the album chart at number two, featuring top 30 singles such as Forgotten Town, Hooverville, Ideal World and Born Again.

In 1988, they released a cover of the Isley Brothers’ Harvest for the World with all proceeds going to charity and collaborated with other Liverpool artists, Paul McCartney, Holly Johnson and Gerry Marsden on a fundraising version of Ferry Cross the Mersey in aid of those affected by the Hillsborough disaster. This stayed at number one for three weeks.

The second album Colour, released in 1990, went to number one in the album charts, followed by Happy in Hell in 1992 and ‘The Best Of’ album released in 1993.

The band name reflects the surname of the original band members – brothers Garry, Russell and Roger, and this has been carried on by today’s line-up, which still includes original enigmatic lead singer Garry.

He has been described by the Daily Mirror as having one of the finest voices in pop and is enjoying performing again as part of a huge UK tour, playing the well-known back catalogue and one or two favourites from newer albums.

Tickets to see The Christians up close and personal at Tamworth Assembly Rooms go on sale at 10am on Thursday, October 24. They will be available online at, in person from Tamworth Tourist Information Centre in Marmion House weekdays and Tamworth Castle on Saturdays, or by calling the Box Office on 01827 709618.
