Mercian ward by-election called for December 12

A by-election will be held in Tamworth's Mercian Ward next month to fill the vacant seat following the death of Cllr Michael Greatorex, it has been confirmed.

Cllr Greatorex, who had represented the people of the Mercian Ward since 2010, passed away at the end of October, after a short illness.

A by-election has now been called, which will take place on the same day as the General Election on December 12. This means voters in the Mercian Ward will be asked to make their choices in both the General and local by-election on that day. The successful candidate will serve out the rest of Cllr Greatorex’s remaining term on Tamworth Borough Council until 2022.

Cllr Greatorex also served on Staffordshire County Council as a representative for Watling South Division, and therefore this seat will also be up for election on December 12.

The successful candidate for the county seat will serve out the remaining term on Staffordshire County Council until 2021.

Nominations are now open for candidates who would like to stand for election for either seat to submit their applications.

Prospective councillors must be over 18 and a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of any other member state of the European Union, and be a registered voter within the borough. They must also have lived, worked or owned property in the borough of Tamworth for more than 12 months.

Nominations must be submitted before the closing date of 4pm on Friday, November 15.

Nomination papers for candidates must be delivered to the Returning Officer, 8th Floor, Marmion House, Lichfield Street, Tamworth, Staffordshire, B79 7BZ, by 4pm on Friday, November 15.

More information about the by-election, including closing dates for applications to the register of electors, postal and proxy votes, can be found online at www.tamworth.gov.uk/elections-2019
