Supplementary planning guidance accompanies and expands on policies and proposals contained in an adopted local plan. It provides greater detail and clarification on policies and proposals and is therefore an important tool in guiding and regulating development.

The Borough Council prepared supplementary planning guidance alongside the Tamworth Local Plan 2001-2011 and carried out public consultation on these documents at draft deposit and revised draft deposit stage. Some of the comments made on the draft deposit supplementary planning guidance were taken into account in formulating the revised guidance. The Council adopted this guidance as interim planning guidance in August 2005. Changes to the planning system, effective from September 2004, means that supplementary planning documents now need to be prepared. Supplementary planning documents are the same as supplementary planning guidance except they undergo more consultation, particularly at the early stages of development.

Supplementary Planning Documents

As the Council replaces the Local Plan with a Local Development Framework, supplementary planning guidance will be replaced by supplementary planning documents (SPD's). Cabinet approved three SPDs for Telecommunications, Planning Obligations and Open Space for New Residential Development on 25 July 2007. The Council had to apply to the Secretary of State to save Local Plan policies beyond July 2009.  Policy EMP8 on telecommunications was deleted in this process because it was considered that national policy in PPG8 adequately covers the issues.  As a result, the Telecommunications SPD has also been downgraded to the status of interim planning guidance and can be accessed from the link on the right.

Unfortunately due to the size and complexity of the Development Control SPD we have been unable to bring this forward as quickly as we would have liked. The intention is to produce a series of topic or theme based documents rather than just one relating to all development control issues.
