Why do we need to monitor?

It is essential that we keep an eye on what is happening within the borough to assess whether our current policies are working and to determine what we have to do in the future. The importance of monitoring will increase as we prepare development plan documents. The borough council will be able to set priorities and to prepare or revise documents when they are needed. It is therefore important that we keep information up-to-date.

At the moment we monitor various changes relevant to planning. We prepare a report that looks at housing developments and one that deals with employment land. You can download the latest reports in the right hand column.

The monitoring data we collect does not only provide an important tool in planning the future of Tamworth, but it also feeds into sub-regional monitoring reports.

Maintaining a five year supply of housing land

The Government requires all local planning authorities to identify sufficient deliverable sites to maintain a continuous five year supply of housing. An explanation of how this has been calculated for Tamworth is contained in the Annual Monitoring Report. 

Annual Monitoring Report

The Council is required to produce an Annual Monitoring Report under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act (2004), with the purpose of monitoring:

• The implementation of the Local Development Scheme; and
• The extent to which policies in Local Development Documents are being achieved

At the moment, the Local Plan, is the principal decision-making document. As long as the policies in the Local Plan have not been superseded by new Local Development Documents, the Annual Monitoring Report will assess the implementation and success of policies in the Tamworth Local Plan 2001-2011. As progress continues on the local development framework the Annual Monitoring Report will change and align itself more fully with the local development framework.
