Accessing Tamworth’s Past

Tamworth Castle - HLF  Development Phase

Tamworth Castle has been awarded £121,900 by The Heritage Lottery Fund to develop an exciting programme of enhancement and conservation which will preserve this unique building and allow more people to experience Tamworth’s past.

HLF workThe development phase allows Tamworth Castle to: Discover Tamworth’s Hidden Past: Tamworth Castle is undertaking in depth historical research into Tamworth Castle’s history and collections. Conserve and Preserve Your Heritage: Completing a maintenance plan to assist with the long term care of the Castle and surrounding area. Access Tamworth’s History: Tamworth Castle is investigating ways to improve physical and intellectual access to the building.

Ask You to Help Shape Tamworth Castle’s Future: An ongoing programme of consultation with local people and groups is underway so you can input into this project.

HLF work

A second round application will request the Heritage Lottery Fund to part finance the delivery of the final project for a total of £759,300. Tamworth Castle hopes to:

Open the steps access across the Castle motte, stabilise the pathway around the outside of the Castle and improve exterior planting and conserve the motte. Improve customer facilities, provide an easy access toilet and re-level the courtyard. Provide exciting hands-on and multi-media activities Create a living history team to bring Tamworth Castle to life and allow visitors to interact with characters from the past.

Provide opportunities for people to participate in conservation, local history research, collections, living history and heritage walks.
