Access
to the Castle
Tamworth Castle is situated on top of a Norman motte, and as
such is accessed via a steep slope. Staff are happy to help any
visitors who may require assistance to reach the top of the slope.
Please telephone in advance of your visit to discuss your
requirements.
There is a drop off point at the bottom of the entrance slope
for any visitors with mobility difficulties; this is accessed
through the Holloway Lodge archway just beyond the Castle
Hotel.
Access within the Castle
The Castle has many rooms situated over three floor levels.
Rooms are access via steep and winding staircases and in some areas
there are uneven flagstone and wooden floors. All visitors should
be careful of their footing throughout the Castle.
Due to the nature of the building access for wheelchair users is
limited to the ground floor only. However, there is still lots to
do including trying out the armour and interaction in the Norman
Exhibition; venturing into the Dungeon to look at the stocks,
viewing the different architectural styles on display in the
Courtyard, and soaking up the atmosphere of the Great Hall.
Within the Great Hall there is a touch screen virtual tour of
the Castle. Visitors follow a detailed photographic walk around the
Castle, with plenty of information on each room, and the families
who lived here. It is an ideal way for visitors who cannot access
the whole building, to enjoy the history and beauty of this ancient
Castle.
Do not forget to take the opportunity to browse in our gift shop
or stop for some refreshments in our on-site café which are also
situated on the ground floor. Regrettably, there are no disabled
toilet facilities within the Castle.
