Belgrave High School has now taken over the running of its sports centre. This has saved the taxpayer almost £100,000, which means the borough council can invest this into other projects.
The school now has complete control over the day-to-day running of the centre and will be able to generate income from hiring out its sports hall, pool and other facilities.
As part of the changes, the Borough Council will look at investing £10,000 into sporting and leisure activities in Belgrave. Activities would be based on public demand and could lead to dance and exercise classes like Zumba being developed. As a result of the savings associated with the school taking over the running of the sports centre, the borough council will be able to invest an extra £15,000 in swimming at Wilnecote Community Leisure Centre. This will mean people of all ages will be able to swim for free. Currently the free swimming is for the under 16s and over 60s.
Swimming lessons will still take place at Belgrave, but they will be run by a private company, rather than Tamworth Borough Council.
