As part of its Strategic Housing Service the
Council provides support and assistance to any individual or
group who is currently living in non-Council owned property in
Tamworth. The service aims to:
- Enable people to live in good quality, safe accommodation
- Work with people to maintain their homes
- Enforce action against those people unwilling to maintain their
properties
Our Aims
We aim to:
- To improve the quality of private sector housing
standards.
- To enable households to live independently in their homes.
- To increase the supply of good quality private sector
accommodation.
- To effectively monitor and improve our services.
What Do We Do?
We perform a number of functions in pursuit of the above aims.
These include:
- Encouraging owners of empty homes to bring their property back
into use
- Encouraging landlords to improve the physical and management
standards of privately rented houses
- Offering accreditation for landlords
- Providing advice and information to homeowners, landlords and
private sector tenants across the Borough
- Providing assistance to vulnerable homeowners to help them to
repair and improve their home
- Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation
- Working to increase the supply of good quality accommodation in
the Private Sector
- Dealing with any requests or complaints relating to
unsatisfactory conditions on mobile home parks
We undertake a range of initiatives to enable us to perform
these functions, such as:
Tackling Empty Homes – Tamworth Borough Council
aims to reduce the number of Empty Homes in the
Borough. By tackling empty homes the Council can return back
into use good quality, affordable and much
needed housing.
Landlords’ Forum – The Council in partnership
with Private Sector Landlords holds a forum on a quarterly
basis throughout the year. Through this, we are able to update
landlords on current changes in legislation and council-led
initiatives, as well as providing a platform for landlords to raise
any issues or concerns they may have.
Landlord Accreditation – Tamworth Borough
Council has revised and is re-launching its accreditation scheme
for Private Sector Landlords. This is a voluntary scheme
which encourages, acknowledges and actively promotes good standards
of privately rented accommodation and assists both landlords and
tenants to undertake their respective responsibilities to each
other.
Housing Advice and Inspections – We will, upon
request, inspect private rented properties free of charge to assess
whether works are required, and offer advice and assistance where
there are concerns regarding the condition and safety of a
property.
Mandatory Licensing of Houses in Multiple
Occupation – It is a requirement by law that certain
Houses in Multiple Occupation are licensed. We will hold and
maintain a register of all HMOs in the borough; we will also
strictly enforce licensing wherever required and, if necessary,
impose sanctions where there is repeated non-compliance.
Private Sector Leasing Scheme - This is a
scheme to work with Private Sector Landlords to lease properties to
tenants to increase the supply of housing to people
looking for housing in the Borough.
The Bond Scheme - Tamworth Borough Council
offers a guarantee to Private Sector Landlords who offer housing to
applicants referred to them by the Council.
Park Homes - Tamworth Borough Council will work
with Park Home Owners to ensure their health safety and welfare and
that standards are maintained as set out in site licences
