Meeting Housing Need
Tamworth is home to a diverse range of communities - all with
differing housing and support needs – new migrant workers are now
playing a role in the local economy, urgent action is required to
meet the needs of Gypsies and Travellers and the needs of BME
communities also need consideration. This is alongside the
predicted ageing population within Tamworth. Much work has
already been undertaken on these subjects but Tamworth Borough
Council recognises that there is still much work to be
completed.
Initiatives such as Supporting People have been in place since
2003 to provide supported housing services that help vulnerable
people to live independently. It helps people who need help
to develop or sustain their independence which may include those
with mental health issues, offenders or those with substance abuse
problems.
Support workers help people recognise what's needed to live
independently and then helps people to work towards agreed targets
or outcomes including:
- Economic wellbeing (reducing debt, getting the right benefits,
finding work)
- Enjoying and achieving (accessing training, getting the right
services, building links with family and friends)
- Being healthy (better physical and mental health, managing
substance misuse)
- Staying safe (avoiding eviction, avoiding harm)
- Making a positive contribution (making choices and getting
involved in the wider community)
The programme is run nationally by Communities and Local
Government and locally by Staffordshire County Council.
