Housing exchanges
You may
want to move to a different home for a number of reasons, the
Council cannot help everyone who would like to transfer
but there are several options that can be considered.
This page gives a brief overview of these options however for

Mutual Exchange
A mutual exchange is to swop homes with
another tenant. As a secure tenant you have a legal right to
arrange a mutual exchange with another tenant or a chain of
tenants. You can swop with tenants of other Councils or Housing
Associations as well as Tamworth Borough Council tenants. Both
parties in any mutual exchange need the permission of each landlord
to swop homes.
You will not normally be allowed to exchange
if:
- you have rent arrears
- you have a current notice of seeking possession, court costs or
any recharges
- you have a possession order for nuisance or breaking your
tenancy agreement.
- the property you are moving to is designed for a specific need
that you do not have e.g. adapted for wheelchair use or
specifically designed for elderly people
- you will over occupy or under occupy the property you are
moving to.
The Council must give you a formal written
decision on whether it will allow you to go ahead with the mutual
exchange within 42 days of receipt of all application forms
Homeswapper Scheme
If you want to move to another area the Homeswappers scheme
allows you to register for a mutual exchange in another part of the
country. please visit their web site www.homeswapper.co.uk
or another site to look at is www.ukhomeswap.co.uk
Transfers
To transfer to another Council property you
must complete a housing application form, which is available
from the Housing Advice team or reception at Marmion
House.
Once on the transfer list you will be awarded
a banding according to your housing need. If the
Council assesses that you are adequately housed then although you
will still be entitled to go on the transfer list you are less
likely to be successful in bidding for properties that are in high
demand.
Allocation of a property is subject to a clear rent account, the
current property has an approved property inspection and there is
no other breach of tenancy conditions for which a current court
order is in force.
