Disabled Facilities Grant

A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) is a Council grant which helps towards the cost of adapting a home to enable a person with disabilities to continue to live there.  A grant is paid when the Council considers that changes are necessary to meet the needs of the individual and that the work is reasonable and practical.

DFGs are used for someone living in a property, who is disabled and is either the owner occupier or a private rented tenant (permission will have to be sought from the landlord for the works to be done) The grant is means tested, except in the case of children under the age of 18, with the maximum grant being £30,000.

Grants are delivered in partnership with Occupational Therapists who provide a medical assessment and Spirita Home Improvement Agency who undertake the drawings, tender for work and provide onsite supervision of building works.

Handyperson service

The Handyperson Service is a service set up to support older people and disabled people to maintain their independence in their own home by carrying out minor repairs and small adaptations in the home.

Anyone who is older or disabled can use the service if they own their own home or are a tenant with repairing responsibility.  Both owner occupiers and tenants can access the service if a small disabled adaptation is required.

The sort of jobs the handyperson will do:

  • Changing tap washers and unblocking sinks
  • Fitting door chains, bolts and locks
  • Fitting curtain rails and curtains
  • Moving and assembling small pieces of furniture

A small charge is attached to this and this will be advised when the handyperson first visits to assess the job and there is no obligation to have any work undertaken.

The service is run by Spirita Home Improvement Agency, which is a service that helps people repair, improve and adapt their homes to enable them to live there with greater independence.

Empty Homes Loans

Grants are available to bring empty homes back into use.  You can apply for up to £10,000 to bring your empty property up to a lettable standard. One of the conditions of this grant is that the property is then put on our nomination scheme for up to 3 years.  We will then nominate tenants to rent the property with the rental money going to the owner.  At the end of the specified time, the property is returned to the owner.

For further information, please contact Marilyn McNally, Landlord Liaison and Empty Homes Officer on 01827 709345.
