Gardening Assistance Scheme

Tamworth Borough Council’s Housing Department is now introducing a new reliable `Gardening Assistance Scheme` for elderly tenants whose personal circumstances makes it impossible for them to deal with their own garden maintenance.

The Gardening Assistance Scheme provides safe, reliable and quality assistance with grass and hedge cutting during the growing session, April to October.

What Service is provided?

The service covers lawn and hedge cutting only and runs throughout the growing session – normally from April to October.

Grass will be cut 10 times per year from April to October (weather permitting). Hedges will be trimmed once a year at the end of the season in  October.

Who is eligible for the service?

The Gardening Assistance Scheme is available to tenants of Tamworth Borough Council who meet the following criteria:

  • The tenant is over the age of 75 and unable to maintain their garden due to a registered disability or a medical condition.
  • Nor has any able bodied persons over the age of 18 living in the property able to maintain the garden.

Those that do not meet the above criteria will have to seek assistance either from their family or from a private gardening contractor. However in exceptional circumstances we may use our discretion for tenants under the age of 75, so we would encourage you to complete the Application Form enclosed or contact us if you are in doubt.

How to apply for the service?

If you establish that you are eligible then please complete and return an Application Form to the Estate Management Team, Housing Department, Tamworth Borough Council, Marmion House, Lichfield Street, Tamworth B79 7BZ. These are available from Marmion House, Lichfield Street or can be downloaded from the link on the right.

Within 5 working days of receipt of your Garden Assistance Application form we will give you official notice to let you know whether or not you have been accepted onto the Garden Assistance Scheme. However due to the popularity of the scheme you may be placed on a waiting list, which operates on a first come - first served basis and as soon as a place becomes available you will be notified.

If you have previously received garden services i.e. grass & hedge cutting from Tamworth Borough Council, you will have to reapply for the new Gardening Assistance Scheme (with the exception of sheltered housing) if you are eligible, as the previous service have now ceased. Tenants that are not eligible will now have to seek assistance either from their family or from a private contractor.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for this service.
