Stray Dog Service

Stray Dog Service

Dogs that stray can be a hazard on the road. Thousands of dogs are killed and injured in road traffic accidents, but the risk doesn't end there. A motorist braking to avoid a dog could easily hit another car, cyclist or pedestrian.

It is every dog owner's responsibility to ensure that their dog is not allowed to stray. However when this does occur there is strict legislation to assist Tamworth Borough Council in dealing with stray dogs.

My dog isn't a stray. It just escaped!

Any dog found wandering in a public place alone is classed as a stray and will be dealt with by Tamworth Borough Council under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. We will endeavour to return the dog to an owner if it is identifiable and it is the first occasion that we have collected the dog as a stray. In all other circumstances the dog will be collected and delivered to kennels.

In order to claim the dog the owner/keeper will be required to pay a statutory fine (this is a charge under the Environmental Protection Act 1990) and administration costs incurred will also be charged before the dog is returned which includes a collection and administration fee. A daily kennelling charge is applicable for the number of days the dog remains in kennels unclaimed.

The charges for return of a dog (including statutory fine and administrations costs are listed below:-

Statutory fine set by Government £25
Administration Fee £20
Kennelling Cost per day/overnight £8
Transport of Dog back to Borough £45.83

Total Charges

Same day £45
One night kennelling £53
Two nights kennelling £61
Three nights kennelling £69
Four nights kennelling £77
Five nights kennelling £85
Six nights kennelling £93
Seven nights kennelling £101

Identification and payment for stray dogs can be made between 8:45am and 7:00pm 7 days per week. Payment is made at the Kennels which are located at Nine Stones Kennels Wishaw Lane. Curdworth. Sutton
Coldfield, West Midlands, B76 9EA. Tel. 01675 470274 . The costs must be paid in full before the dog can be released.

(Note:- the kennels are located 15 minutes drive away from Tamworth for collection of dogs. A dog can be returned to an owner via the collection service however a cost will be incurred)

REMEMBER…. LETTING YOUR DOG STRAY CAN BE EXPENSIVE!!

Furthermore there may an additional offence under the Road and Traffic Act 1988 if the dog was found on a public highway. If after an initial warning a dog is found on a highway, Tamworth Borough Council may prosecute the owner through the Magistrates court. There is a maximum fine of £200.

My dog knows his way around and always comes home when he's ready!

Dogs that are unsupervised cause a nuisance to members of public. They may intimidate people, cause a hazard on the road and foul in public places. The owner cannot control their behaviour or what they do. Tamworth Borough Council will deal with him as a stray.

Identification tags and chips

Dogs must wear a collar and tag when in a public place and you can be prosecuted if you do not do this.

The tag (or similar method of identification) should include your name and address and contact telephone numbers.

You can micro chip your dog so that it can always be identified. The permanent chip is easy to update if your details change and can be read by a scanner. It is advisable that on an annual basis the reading of a chip is checked by a VET to ensure that the chip is operating correctly.

What happens to unclaimed stray dogs?

Tamworth Borough Council has a statutory duty to keep the dog in kennels for a period of seven clear days. If the dog is not claimed in this time and the former owner loses all rights to its return.

The dog is then offered for re-homing.

I've found a stray dog and wish to keep it.

You are legally required to notify the Tamworth Borough Council when you find a stray dog. It is possible for the finder to retain the dog, and the re-homing facility operated by the Dun Roamin collection service can assist you in this process http://www.dun-roamin.com/
