Silver Fish
Size - Approximately 12mm
long
Markings - Slender silver
grey in appearance. Their lifecycle being completed in four months
in warm humid conditions. Wingless with three bristletails at the
end of their body.
Location - Silver fish can be
found in damp areas, kitchens, bathrooms, under loose floor
coverings, along skirting boards pipe work and behind
wallpaper.
Detection - They are mostly
active at night feeding on mould, food particles and paper some
times leaving yellow staining on paper and fabric.
Being very active in the areas food is
available they can be seen trapped in wash hand basins and
baths.
Control and treatment
methods:
Silver fish are harmless and pose no threat to
humans, their control is relatively easy by reducing the amount of
damp in rooms by venting, drying and cleaning of areas where
there is evidence of activity.
Once the drying out process is achieved a
treatment can be carried out successfully on any remaining insects
using a light dusting of insecticide powder in cracks and crevices
and under shelves sinks etc. Insecticides are available in hardware
and garden stores.
