Eviction announcement highlights Council’s zero tolerance on drug dealers
Tamworth Borough Council has announced a hard
line approach on drug dealers, making it clear that tenants
convicted of drug offences will be evicted.
Last week a 32 year old tenant from Carlcroft,
Stonydelph was convicted on several counts of possessing and
supplying class A and class C drugs and given a 30 month custodial
sentence. Following this conviction the council claimed back
possession of the property on the counts that the convicted tenant
was dealing drugs from the property as well as causing anti social
behaviour which was impacting other residents in the area.
“Tamworth Borough Council will not tolerate
drug dealing from our tenants” said Councillor Mary Oates,
portfolio holder for Quality of Life. “This is a serious breech of
tenancy not to mention the associated anti social behaviour which
significantly impacts the surrounding area. The activities of this
particular tenant caused significant problems affecting the quality
of life of other residents in the area. Tenants found to be guilty
of dealing drugs will be evicted from their properties; we are
taking a zero tolerance approach to rid our streets of drugs.”
The case was heard at Tamworth Civil courts
and a possession order was granted and the defendant was also
ordered to pay court costs of £150 and any outstanding rent
arrears.
