Community Development

What is Community Development in Tamworth?

The Council recognises that within our communities there is a lot of knowledge and experience which can have a real impact in identifying issues and improving things for the future. Community Development has been established to lead the way we engage our local people.

“Community participation and joint working is vital to reaching communities' most wanted goals”

The Community Development Team works alongside people in communities and builds relationships with key people and organisations. Development Workers help the community to work together and identify common concerns. By enabling people to act together, Community Development Workers help to foster community cohesion and equality.

Community Development in Tamworth is delivered in line with national values and principles and the Community Development Team are involved in a variety of initiatives at the heart of Local Strategic Partnership activity within selected neighbourhoods.

Community Development Workers, along with other professionals are based directly in a locality alongside a community; the aim is to provide professional engagement without “doing unto” people. It is always preferable that the community shares ownership of activity, which develops pride and responsibility, rather than imposing “what they should do”.

The outcome of effective community engagement and involvement aims to create an individual and passionate drive from the community, which in turn leads to stronger and more sustainable communities.
