Living history has the potential to bring displays to life, highlighting the
‘human element’ of collections, objects and events, offering visitors a window into the past”

The Castle has built up a series of interactive and well received living history presentations.
The Castle’s interpreters encourage visitors to interact with them either via questions, conversations or even inviting them to join-in with their task.

The live interpretation is based around the lives of the families and servants who lived and worked in the Castle over the centuries. The scenarios range from the Victorian housekeeper supervising her servants whilst they go about their duties to meeting the Tudor noble household and their servants preparing for and participating in a grand feast.

Contemporary documentation including inventories, bills, letters, census returns, autobiographies and publications have been used to develop character roles and scenarios for the public.

The living history programme is designed to engage and entertain visitors.  Not only does the programme have the benefit of bring history to life and enabling visitors to interact with the interpreters, but it also offers a welcoming and flexible form of communication.
