Conservation at Tamworth Castle

Tamworth Castle is recognised in law as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the group of buildings that comprise the ‘Castle’ are of national, archaeological, architectural and historical interest and importance. Tamworth has one of the oldest and largest of all Norman Mottes, with an exceptionally rare Norman polygonal shell keep and integral square tower. Inside the shell keep is an impressive fifteenth century open hall with a wide-span tie beam roof. Various other buildings range in date from the twelfth to the nineteenth century.

We are committed to preserving Tamworth Castle’s built heritage for the enjoyment and learning of future generations whilst promoting access to this unique heritage today.

“Tamworth Castle is a unique monument offering an inspiring, entertaining and enjoyable
learning experience for all our users. Through the collection, conservation,
interpretation and exhibition of museum collections and buildings, we strive to maximise
access to, and understanding of, Tamworth’s heritage”
