Private Hire and Hackney Carriage Drivers license

Before you can drive a licensed hackney carriage or private hire vehicle you must obtain a driver's license, if you do not have this license and you drive one of these vehicles you will be committing an offence.  

To be eligible to apply for a hackney carriage or private hire drivers license you must have held a full UK DVLA Driving license for a minimum of two years.  Please refer to Criteria for Applicants

New Applications - First steps

To apply for a private hire and  hackney carriage driver license, you are required  to present your application in person to Tamworth Borough Council Marmion House Lichfield Street Tamworth Staffordshire B79 7BZ  between the hours of 0900 – 1200 Monday – Friday  (PLEASE NOTE POSTAL APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED)

The following documents will need to be completed/processed:-

  • Application Form and Fee (see Fees and charges for taxis link),  Payment can be made either by cheque/postal order or credit/debit card
  • DVLA mandate disclosure – completed and signed
  • Criminal records bureau disclosure – to be processed when presenting application at Tamworth Borough Council

When presenting your application you must bring with you the following documentation:

  • DVLA driving license – compulsory (photo-card type if unable to present valid passport)
  • Valid passport – if you hold a valid passport it is compulsory that this is presented on application
  • Birth certificate – if available
  • Marriage certificate – if available
  • National Insurance number e.g. P45 - compulsory
  • Three recent passport size photographs - compulsory
  • Two documents (less than three months old) that shows your address

If you do not have all the documentation required the application will not be accepted. All documents produced on application must be valid, bear the same name, address and date of birth.

Following submission of  completed application form and fee, a Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure Application Form will be completed.  A medical appointment will be booked for you to attend at Aldergate Medical Practice Salters Lane Tamworth.

 

What happens next

When all the documents have been processed and cleared, you will be required to attend a knowledge test.  If you fail the test you will be given the opportunity to do a retake.

When you have passed the knowledge test you will be advised by the Licensing Officer when your license/badge will be available for collection.
