Apply for a vehicle license

New Applications – Vehicles must be 4 years old or under

To apply for a private hire or hackney carriage vehicle license, you are required to present your application at Tamworth Borough Council with the following:

  • Completed Application Form

When presenting your application, you must bring with you the following documentation:

  • The Vehicle Registration document V5 (copy acceptable)
  • Valid Insurance Document
  • The current application fee (see Fees and charges for taxis) Payment can be made either by cheque/postal order or credit/debit card

If you forget any of the above items when you attend the Tamworth Borough Council to make your application, your application will not be accepted and the vehicle will not be considered for testing.

On completion of the application form and payment of fee an MOT appointment will be booked with the Councils nominated garage where the vehicle will be tested.

When presenting your vehicle for MOT appointment you must ensure that the vehicle is fitted with:

  • Fire Extinguisher
  • First Aid Kit

If you wish to cancel a pre-arranged appointment you must do so at least 48 hours before the scheduled test time. Failure to do so will result in you being charged for a missed test. Payment will have to be made to Tamworth Borough Council before another appointment is made.

A vehicle MUST not be used for Private Hire/Hackney Carriage purposes after testing unless the license has been obtained.

What happens next

If the vehicle passes the test you will be notified by the Licensing Officer of arrangements to collect your License/Plate/ - (Stickers for Private Hire Vehicles)

When collecting  your license/plate you will be given a bracket free of charge to be permanently fixed to the rear bumper of the vehicle. The flexi plate bracket must be permanently fixed to the rear of the vehicle.
